Old Meets New at Cumberland Hospital.
Cumberland Hospital Building 3A north was completed in 1876 as part of a male asylum to house difficult patients. The existing interior consisted of dormitories, day rooms and 34 single rooms; the northern wing also featured rows of cells.
Unused for many years, Sydney West Area Health Service required the building to house their Information Technology services. Morrison Design Group was commissioned to design and manage the transformation of the two levels into suitable office space.
Morrison Design Group called upon ASSA ABLOY Australia Pty Ltd to prepare a specification incorporating all aspects of door hardware and security in line with the client’s requirements of being sparse yet functional in design. The initial meeting confirmed that this was a unique project requiring unique products and advice.
It was established that ASSA ABLOY had to take into consideration (when selecting appropriate hardware) that some existing doors and frames were to be retained, most of which were over 100 years old.
The original brief required stylistic features to be confined to minor detailing, the Lockwood Robert Watson range of door furniture was chosen as the perfect solution. The unique rose-less aluminium range of pure form and function would help combine the old with the new.
As a part of ASSA ABLOY’s specification service, all hardware required for the project was entered into a dedicated hardware scheduling program, conforming to all Australian standards and code requirements. Utilised within the specification were the Lockwood Robert Watson door furniture, 8800 Series Floor Springs, 2516 cam action door closers, Eff Eff and Padde electric strikes, all part of ASSA ABOLY Australia’s large range of brands and products. Cumberland Hospital is a fine example of how architects, designers and builders can utilise the services of ASSA ABLOY to provide locking and design solutions for any project big or small.
ASSA ABLOY provides a free hardware scheduling service that is utilised by many architectural practices, construction companies and end users to assist them in dealing with the difficulties involved in compiling their door hardware documentation.
