Benefits of Brass

Sustainable and hardwearing

Brass never goes out of style. In fact, there is a reason why iconic Australian brand, Lockwood, uses brass in most of its commercial door hardware, including a spectacular range of brass levers, plate and rose furniture, which are assembled and customised in Australia.

According to ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions Product Manager, Malila Gabuardi: “Brass is a premium, strong and durable metal. There is a misconception in the market that stainless steel is the best material for corrosive environments. This is not our experience at all.”

“What we’ve seen at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions is that brass out -performs stainless steel significantly. The Lockwood Satin Chrome on brass has been successfully tested to withstand 1000 hours of saline exposure in a Neutral Salt Spray tank and has a long history of trouble-free service in coastal applications and corrosive environments such as public swimming pools.”

“Our local manufacturing process enables us to maintain strict controls on finish and product quality. The Satin Chrome Plating finishes that we use are warranted to be free of defects in material and workmanship against corrosion, tarnishing and discolouration for a period of 10 years.”

Brass is also a more sustainable option than stainless steel. It is Green Tag certified and finished and assembled in ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions’ ISO9001 & ISO14001 certified factory in Melbourne.

“Global GreenTag certified products pass the world's toughest standards and provides transparency around the impact of the total product life cycle. Our brass plate furniture has been assessed at Green Rate level A and on certain product configurations we have completed formal Environmental Product Declaration (EPDs),” says Malila.

ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions take sustainability and environmental impact very seriously. As an international leader in opening solutions, it’s important to take a lead and shift towards more sustainable products, solutions and operations.

Lockwood have achieved these certifications because of the entire organisation’s commitment to a more sustainable future. The certifications have been achieved as brass is easier to manufacture (being a softer material) and requires less energy to forge and machine than stainless steel does.  More importantly, there is less waste; and scrap material is readily recyclable, as well as the finished product at the end of its life.

“Selecting a more sustainable and Australian Made hardware not only ensures the product is designed to meet the specific requirements of our market but ensures great quality and provides a greater benefit to the Australian environment and economy in these uncertain times,” says Malila.

ASSA ABLOY Opening Solution will continue to focus on sustainable innovation including considerations for product life cycle and manufacturing processes. Considering brass door furniture is hard wearing and has been manufactured with minimal use of resources and environmental impact, the Lockwood Brass Furniture is the perfect choice (1220, 1420, 1360, 1370, 1800, 2800, 4800, and 5800 Series).
